Welcome to the “with the expert’s Show”! Today we are going to talk about three essential materials of construction, each of them with an expert in the area. These materials are : stone, brick and iron .

Here we have a geophysics engineer, Olianna Gonzalez, graduated from Standford University, in California.

I: Hello Olianna. Thank you for your time to this interview.

O: Hi, it’s a pleasure for me.

I: So, Olianna, what are the most important characteristics of stones?

O: one of the most important characteristic is its (incorrect subject-pronoun agreement) durability, which is the reason why it is so common to use stones in construction. They are also no deformable. And obviously, remember that stone is good in compression matters, whereas is not that good in tension.

I: According to these characteristics, do you think stones can be used in other areas?

O: Yes, for example: it is used in art like in sculptures, in jewelry, among others.

I: So, which ones are the most common to use in construction, from your own knowledge?

O: I believe marble, granite and flagstone.

I: Finally, what do you think are the advantages of using stone in construction?

O: I think, from my studies, that it possesses special qualities needed for some constructions or treatment as it is its durability and adaptability, and it can also be used naturally, even though, sometimes it is tough to cut them and even transport them.

I: Ok Olianna, thank you so much for sharing your time with us.

O: It’s really a pleasure and I am so glad to hear people interested in materials and their uses.

I: Now we have an Industrial Engineer from Ceramica Industrial in Caracas, please welcome Rafael Arguinzones.

I: Hello Rafael, nice to meet you.

R: The pleasure is mine

I: As far as I know, in your country, especially in Caracas, bricks are very commonly used in shantytowns. Why do you think they are so common?

R: There are three types of brick: the exterior brick façade, where appearance is important. The common brick used in construction. In my opinion, bricks are so common because of its resistant to moisture and heat, have a long life compared with stone, can be dried in the sun and also has a fairly low cost in its production and transportation. As well as the stones, bricks are good in compression. I believe those are the reasons why they are so used in shantytowns because of it is cheap and easy to find.

I: What are they made of?

R: Brick is made with a paste composed of cement, lime putty and sand.

I: Can you tell us two types of bricks?

R: Ok, we have the solid brick and the empty brick.

I: Can you summarize the process of fabrication of bricks?

R: Well, that’s a tough question. I guess I can summarize it in 8 steps: maturing or development, refinement, deposit, molding, drying, firing and, finally, storing.

I: Now we have our third specialist, Stephany Fermin, a civil engineer coming all the way from an iron industry in Australia.

I: Good morning, Stephany

S: Hi everyone! Good morning

I: So tell us, what are the characteristics of iron?

S: It is composed of iron with lots of carbon, it is strong in compression and weak in tension and is also used in arch bridges, cannons and historic domes.

I: I heard that in your country the corrugated iron is commonly used. Can you explain us, what are the corrugated irons?

S: Corrugated iron is a building material composed of sheets of hot-dip galvanized mild steel cold-rolled to have a linear corrugated pattern in them. They are cheap, easy to transport, corrosion- resistant, durable, lightweight, strong, supple and available everywhere.

I: When was it first used in Australia?

S: Iron has been used in Australia from the first days of European settlement. It was invented in 1840s, and was originally made of wrought iron. Iron soon became a common construction material in rural areas in the United States and Australia and later India.
